Key Points: June 2, 2017

Synopsis: Good Friday morning! An upper level ridge will deliver the hottest day of the season for many today, but will also introduce a severe threat across the eastern Dakotas into Minnesota this afternoon into tonight. Another upper ridge sets in for next week with warm warm temperatures ahead of our next cold front by midweek. In the video, I will time out the precipitation chances for the week and talk temperatures as well. In the longer range, the Pacific jet looks to ramp back up, with precipitation chances closer to normal into next weekend and perhaps beyond as well. Have a blessed weekend!

  • The big story today will be the heat in the Dakotas, with temperatures soaring into the middle to upper 90s.

  • The heat is thanks to an upper ridge settled over the region along with an approaching disturbance from the west. This will fire up some storms this afternoon and tonight.

  • The SPC continues to highlight the eastern Dakotas into Minnesota for a marginal risk for severe weather this afternoon and tonight.

  • Here’s a look at the future radar through tonight.

  • Rainfall through the weekend will be extremely storm dependent!

  • Winds over the next 4 days are shown below.

  • The pattern into early next week remains warm and largely dry thanks to a large upper ridge.

  • There is certainly some hope for more rainfall chances into week 2. It will likely be storm dependent, but some active times are possible. Here’s our week 2 forecast.

Confidence and Risks:

  • Above average confidence in some severe storms this afternoon and evening in the eastern Dakotas into the Upper Midwest.
  • Above average confidence in warm to hot conditions through early next week before returning closer to normal late week.
  • Increasing confidence in dryness lingering in week 1, while week 2 is beginning to trend slightly wetter.
