8-6-19 Northern Plains: Severe threat across portions of the Dakotas later today….briefly drier/quieter mid-week. N.

Today’s video:

Observed rainfall over the past 24 hours panned out as anticipated across MN with localized 0.5-1.5″ noted east of Worthington through Rochester to Minneapolis especially…otherwise, it was a dry day region-wide:

Tuesday as a whole today will be fairly inactive on the radar…however, after 3pm we think storms fire-up near Bismarck and take a dive SE towards Pierre, Aberdeen to Sioux Falls as outlined well in the strong storm outlook below (areas in the yellow especially)…main risks will be damaging winds and large hail…bust isolated tornadoes will be possible:

Here’s a quick loop regarding our favored simulated radar guidance…you’ll also noted another scattered pulse of locally strong storms possible across northeast ND to northern MN at the same time possible as well. A few localized storms possible across NW ND but think this more few and far between:

Total rainfall guidance over the next 36 hours is below…where the cluster of storms develops and treks SE we favor in a narrow band of a few counties 0.5-1.5″ (localized 2-3″ in pockets) between Bismarck, ND down to Pierre east to Mitchell, SD. Otherwise, 0.25-1.0″ possible in a scattered fashion in northern MN / NE ND and a few areas seeing ~0.1-0.3″ in NW ND (most of us stay dry here however):

As we mentioned in the video above, the pattern stays active late week through the weekend across our area and localized heavy rainfall of 1-2″+ especially across central North Dakota, central South Dakota, to the southern third of Minnesota. Locations outside of this like the western and eastern Dakotas to the northern half of MN we favor a range of 0.25-1.0″:
