8-21-19 Northern Plains: Beautiful today-Thursday…storm risks return to Dakotas Friday…unsettled weekend. N.

Today’s video:

Observed rainfall over the past 24 hours:

Here’s today’s weather snapshot…pretty straight forward, high pressure overhead leaving widespread pleasant / dry conditions area-wide. A few light showers possible from Sioux Falls to far southern MN from now through about 3-5pm before weakening under high pressure as it takes hold:

Thursday weather headlines are below, still seeing high pressure hold strong:

Late Thursday night into early Friday morning we are watching closely for a line of showers and storms to work east of Montana to far western North Dakota…but think as it travels further east towards Minot it runs into drier air and weakens:

Friday afternoon into the evening this same broken line of showers/storms redevelops east of Minot towards Devil’s Lake down to Jamestown and Aberdeen:

Total rainfall guidance through Friday night is below…pretty much for eastern SD to most of Minnesota it’s a completely dry period…further west we will still only see spotty ~0.1-0.5″ totals…high pressure overhead keeps many of us dry still here in the short-term:

However, this dry stretch won’t last as discussed in the video, with more widespread heavier rains in the forecast later Saturday all the way through Monday from west to east on the order of ~0.5-1.5″:
