8-1-18 Northern Plains: Cooler day for the region… storm chances increase into the weekend. B.

Today’s Video:

Good Wednesday morning everyone! We have some scattered showers that are still pushing southeast across portions of Southern Minnesota and far SE SD. These will continue to push SE and weaken throughout the morning hours. However, some re-development is possible in SE Minnesota this afternoon. Cannot rule out an isolated strong storm, but many miss out completely.

These storms push out by the nighttime hours. Overall, here’s a look at additional rainfall for the rest of the day via the HRRR model. Generally, most of the Northern Plains miss out on rain today, but those that see a storm this afternoon and rain in E. Minnesota this morning could see 0.1-0.25″ with localized higher amounts.

Overall, tomorrow will be mostly quiet. Cannot rule out a few isolated showers/storms in S. Central SD overnight tonight, in Western North Dakota tomorrow morning, and possibly clipping Northern ND/N. MN late tomorrow, but dry air behind the front will generally suppress rain risks. However, we could see some patchy fog tomorrow morning in portions of the Eastern Dakotas and Minnesota:

However, activity begins to pick up as we head into Friday. Southwest flow aloft will allow for rain chances to increase. You can see here that we could see some scattered light rain chances in Western and Central North Dakota Friday Morning to Friday Afternoon, but the main activity will begin to pick up in the late evening and overnight hours.

We could see multiple rounds of storm clusters this weekend beginning late Friday with two more rounds possible late Saturday and late Sunday. The GFS has the front moving through quicker and pushes much of the activity south by Sunday/Monday while the Euro lingers activity into the area much of Sunday and Monday.

We continue to think that the GFS may be a bit too quick with the front, so we’ll side with the European solution for now. Here’s a look at 7-day rainfall totals from the European:

Here’s a look at the temperatures over the next 4 days: Highs will steadily increase over the next few days into the weekend with widespread 90s returning Friday:
