7-26-18 Northern Plains: Very cool day for much of Minnesota… strong storms possible in Southwest South Dakota tomorrow. B.

Today’s Video:

Good Thursday morning everyone! Overall, a quiet start to the day with just a few scattered showers in Southern South Dakota this morning. Generally, this will be the theme throughout the day with a few very isolated showers in Minnesota and Eastern North Dakota, with a better shot of scattered showers/storms in far SW SD this afternoon and evening:

The better threat for a couple of strong storms — possibly a few severe storms — will develop in SW South Dakota — possibly clipping as far east as South-Central South Dakota a county or two south of Pierre. Some of these storms could contain strong wind gusts and large hail.

Scattered showers and storms could also development in SW ND and NW SD tomorrow afternoon and into the evening hours. The storm cluster should push off to the south and east as we head into the late evening and overnight hours with some re-development possible in Southern South Dakota. At this time, thinking the area of showers/storms that re-develops likely misses Southern Minnesota as it heads east into Saturday morning:

Note, a few pop-up showers and storms are possible Saturday and Sunday before an additional area of high pressure will work into the area to start next week. All-in-all, this high pressure will really suppress rain risks over the next 7 days, with many not picking up any measurable rainfall (and the model is likely overdone with convective feedback in Minnesota). The spots that see scattered showers/storms this weekend likely pick up ~0.1-0.25″, but this will probably not be widespread.

Again, temperatures will be a big story with very cool weather today and overnight lows getting close to the upper-40s:
