7-12-18 Central Plains Forecast: Rainfall risks increase heading through the weekend. Details here. N.

Video:

After a very quiet week so far, things start to change as we go throughout the next 60 hours.  Watch the video for more info on timing of rainfall, but here is a look at rain potential going throughout the next 60 hours (through 1pm CDT Saturday).  Watching for some heavy storms tonight especially in northern/northwest Nebraska, then we’ll need to watch eastern Nebraska and western/northwest Iowa for heavy rain and flash flood potential as we head throughout Friday night.  Essentially, the areas that have been wet over the past month get the rains, while the areas further southeast that need rainfall continue to miss out in the short-term….that should start to change as we look beyond into next week.

Forecast radar over the next 60 hours:

Heat advisories continue today and tomorrow for portions of the area.  Heat index values peak near 105º in these areas.

Heading from Saturday and Sunday, scattered storm chances continue, with the highest risks across Iowa and northern Missouri.  The WPC has the area highlighted in a slight risk for excessive rainfall.  Still some question marks on the weekend rain chances here as it will depend how tomorrow night’s wave further west pans out.  Here are the excessive rainfall outlooks for Friday and Saturday.

Forecast rainfall through Tuesday:  I think fairly widespread 1-3″ rains across Nebraska and Iowa, with more scattered rainfall further south across Missouri and Kansas.  Feel like southwest Missouri and southeast Kansas have the highest risk to miss out on the rains.  We know there have been continued tendencies for southeast Iowa to also stay drier.  I do feel this area will see less than areas further west in the state, but still feel you have a solid shot there for 0.5″ to 1″ at least.

We likely see some drier weather towards Tuesday of next week, but we’ll need to be on the lookout for additional rounds of showers of storms across the region mid to late week.  Here are our weeks 1 and 2 precipitation from normal outlooks.

Here’s how temperatures trend from normal over the next 1-2 weeks.  Certainly a cooler pattern ahead, especially the northern half of the region!
