5-11-18 Northern Plains: Additional rainfall chances into Saturday… warmer and drier for Sunday! B.

Today’s Video:

Good Friday morning everyone!

Overnight heavy rain is moving east through southern Minnesota this morning and will eventually work out of the area into the early afternoon. Scattered rain showers will continue for South Dakota into the early afternoon, but start to diminish as moisture tries to move into drier air. However, additional energy will develop and push north as we work into the afternoon and evening hours for South Dakota and Minnesota.

Rain showers – especially in South Dakota – tomorrow morning will push north into drier air and begin to diminish throughout the day. Some scattered showers are possible into Sunday, but looking much more isolated than today and tomorrow:

Overall, here’s a look at 24 hour rainfall amounts into Saturday evening (left) and Sunday evening (right) from the European model:

Luckily, after cool temperatures today and tomorrow where precipitation is falling, conditions will warm up quite a bit as we head into Sunday and Monday!

We will need to watch out for freeze risks tonight in the northern half of Minnesota as clear skies, dry air and dry soil conditions will allow temperatures to plummet:

Here’s a look at dew point temperatures over the next 4 days:

We could see some more southwest flow and shower/storm activity next week, but upper-level flow likely prevents much of it from reaching the northern half of the area and better rain chances will linger in South Dakota and Southern Minnesota. Here’s a look at 7 day precipitation from the Euro and ICON models. (note some of this precipitation has already fallen in SE South Dakota and Southern Minnesota):
