Today’s Video (6:00):
Good Thursday Morning* everyone!
Scattered snow showers with light snow accumulations are on the table today. Many areas will pick up a coating to a half inch, but we’re watching two main areas that could see 1-3″ of snow in heavier bands. Some will see no snow as the showers will be scattered. The heavier bands will be very narrow, so nailing down exactly where the heaviest snow will fall is tedious, but here is our best idea for areas most likely to see the heavier snow bands. Note, the area is wider than the band will be to cover any potential track shifts. The first band is currently ongoing in South Dakota, and the band along the border of the Dakotas will develop late this evening.
Our next chance of snow really begins to pick up late tomorrow morning into the afternoon hours and continue through all of Friday for North Dakota. Snow will work into Minnesota by the late afternoon tomorrow. Scattered rain is likely for portions of South Dakota and Southern Minnesota. Snow winds down for North Dakota overnight Friday and snow should exit Saturday morning for Minnesota. Due to strong upward motion, frontal forcing and instability a very heavy band with intense snowfall rates is possible.
Here’s a look at the total precipitation from these events into Sunday morning! Note, some places in South Dakota will miss out on the rain chances altogether. Overall, very little precipitation amounts are likely for Southern Minnesota and Central/Southeastern North Dakota.
Brutally cold wind chills of nearly -20F are possible Saturday morning for North Dakota as strong winds and cold air behind the storm filter into the area.
We’re watching another system that has the potential to bring more accumulating snow for portions of the region early next week. Models have struggled with this system to this point, but data is trying to come into better agreement for snow risks on Monday.
