3-19-18 Northern Plains: Targeting additional shots of snowfall over the next 2 days…wintry risks increasing late week as well. K.

Today’s video (6:30):

Simulated radar guidance through late tonight shows the snow mixing with rain at times across eastern North and South Dakota as well as western Minnesota as temperatures this afternoon into the evening look to climb in the the upper 30s lower 40s…we will be cold enough aloft in the atmosphere to support snow, but in terms of accumulations on pavement it will be difficult to hold much…on grassy/elevated surfaces ~0.5-1.5″ (maybe locally 2″) possible:

Picking up where the HRRR model left off is the 3km NAM model, we can see that same healthy band of snow continues across the eastern Dakotas into Minnesota on Tuesday…we think at times moderate to heavy bursts of wet snow will be possible especially for central/southern Minnesota. You’ll also notice there’s another sneaky piece of energy moving northwest to southeast late tonight into Tuesday and Tuesday night across the western half of North Dakota and the northern/eastern half of South Dakota as well as southwestern Minnesota for another shot light/moderate snow showers:

Here’s your 24 hour snowfall guidance from late Monday night into Tuesday…we circled an area in pink where we think we could exceed guidance on snowfall of 4″+ into Tuesday, with surrounding areas likely picking up 1-3″:

Looking at this from a perspective of snowfall over the next 7 days from both the Euro and GFS models shows the overall nature of a very active/snowy pattern especially across most of North Dakota, eastern South Dakota and the southern half of Minnesota…at least good news for adding additional soil moisture:

Temperatures from normal via our updated weeks 1 and 2 forecast shows things staying slightly below normal:
