2-8-18 Northern Plains: Heavy snow likely for portions of the region today! B.

Video (5 min):

Good Thursday Morning!

We are carefully watching a system that is going to work into the area today and put down some heavy snow in portions of the region. The initial band of snow is already working through portions of South Dakota and the heaviest bands of snow will work in later today.

Here’s a look at the latest simulated radar from the hi-resolution NAM. You can see the heaviest snow will fall throughout the day today and into this evening. It does look like the main wave of the snow should work it’s way out of portions of North Dakota by midnight tonight and move east of South Dakota overnight around 3AM CST. However, we do expect snow showers and additional accumulations to linger into the day tomorrow in the southern third of South Dakota. Minnesota also sees accumulation snow with this system, which will push east of the state by tomorrow morning.

One thing to note is that some spots in Southwest South Dakota could see a light mix of sleet and freezing rain especially this afternoon and evening before the cold air begins to sag south. Snow will likely fall on top of this tonight and into tomorrow creating extremely hazardous travel conditions.

However, again, we will likely see additional accumulations throughout the day tomorrow for the southern-most part of South Dakota.

Here is our snowfall forecast through Friday:

We also expect breezy winds shifting from east to north across South Dakota gusting to 25 mph.  This will lead to lower visibilities with the snow this evening.  Winds here will diminish by Friday morning.

Temperatures will be very cold across the area over the next few days:

Watching the risk for some light snow this weekend mainly for northern areas, but not looking very impressive at this time.
