2-4-18 Ohio Update: Latest snow potential today.. watching additional snow chances this week. B.

Good Sunday Morning!

Snow is falling across much of Ohio this morning and working off to the east. Here’s a look at the current radar across the region and temperatures.

Generally, accumulations will be light especially on pavements where warm temperatures will likely cause most snow to melt on contact. You can see temperatures are hovering at or above freezing across the entire state. However, snow will fall heavy enough at times to produce a light coating on the road. With that being said, we expect temperatures to rise throughout the day due to a warm southwest wind, which should make this potential fairly isolated.

This morning’s wave of snow looks to push off east of the state by the early afternoon hours which central portions of Ohio seeing a break starting around noon. However, an additional line of snow showers is possible along the arctic front this evening. Light snow showers look to develop in west and northwest Ohio by 3PM this afternoon, but the heaviest snow will develop late this evening and into tonight and quickly push across the state and exit eastern Ohio around midnight.

Overall, we’re still thinking roadway impacts will be limited initially with warm surface temperatures, however, that final wave will usher in colder air. We’re thinking with surface temperatures dropping well below freezing we could see some quick accumulations on roads/pavements with the final wave and then a refreeze of any wet roads. Overall, here’s a look at the total accumulation for these waves:

We do think the heaviest snow falls in eastern Ohio, but again, much of that is with warmer surface temperatures, so we think much less will accumulate on roadways. That being said, the better chance for accumulation on pavement is that final wave and here’s how much snow it could put down:

I do think we could have moderate snow at times, but this system will move quickly and limit accumulations.

The next system we need to watch works into the area is a quick-hitting clipper that will likely produce some accumulations Monday night into Tuesday. Snow may show up on the radar as early as Monday evening, but we’re thinking initially dry air prevents much of this from reaching the ground.

There are still some major differences between models in term’s of accumulation. The NAM is limits the impact to the northern third of Ohio while the GFS and RGEM gives much of the northern 2/3rds of the state accumulating. Regardless, it does appear Northern Ohio is in the best spot for snow accumulations, maybe 1-2″ with isolated higher amounts. We’ll keep you updated on this potential tomorrow as models hone in on a solution.

Finally, we are watching a mid-week system that models have been consistent with putting down accumulating snow across portions of state.

We’ll update on that potential as more data arrives tomorrow. Have a great rest of your Sunday!
