Hello again everyone! Our wave from this morning continues to progress eastward bringing areas of light snow to northern MN while some upper-level energy that will be discussed below is providing additional scattered snow chances to central ND as of 11:35am CST. As stated from this morning, the snows are expected to remain on the lighter side through the remainder of today into tonight, but not exit as we see another reinforcing shot of upper-level energy currently located in ND provide enough forcing to keep scattered snow chances around, especially in northern MN but also ND.
Here’s an updated synopsis of what to expect going into tonight: We’ll watch a couple pieces of energy (the first shown below) help to keep scattered light snow activity around through the remainder of the day and even into Sunday for some areas in ND and northern MN. However, the best chances for accumulating snows continue in the northern third of MN.
Simulated radar through 6am CST Sunday: As previously stated, snow showers will persist in northern MN throughout the day while wrap-around snow showers found in central ND currently will continue to traverse eastward across additional portions of that state. A few snow showers are likely to clip northeastern SD during this time. However, as we progress through the overnight hours and into early Sunday morning, the bulk of the snow shower activity will be found over northern MN as a result of the upper-level energy exiting ND and allowing the scattered snow coverage to slowly fade.
Simulated radar from 6am to 6pm CST Sunday: Sunday will be the day we really start to notice the weakening trend as the energy starts to exit. Most snow shower activity will have either faded or exited ND by 12pm CST Sunday while northern MN comes later around 8pm CST (with a few flurries still hanging around by the end of the loop). A few light snow showers will likely clip northeastern SD, especially Sunday morning with some scattered light coverage possible throughout the day Sunday in southern MN. It will become noticeably drier across a majority of the area late Sunday into most of Sunday night.
Here’s a look at additional snowfall through Sunday: Snow accumulations continue to remain on the lighter side with the best accumulating snow risks being located over the northern third of MN (circled region below). While not zero per-say, an additional very light dusting of snow is possible in ND and southern MN, but the risk is low. Regardless, lower visibilities in the snow showers will be common along with slick roadways so definitely take it easy if traveling this weekend. Snow accumulations will be less likely the further south you head.
Simulated of wind gusts through the day Sunday: Lower visibilities as previously discussed will be likely in the wrap-around snow showers today. Regardless, strong winds are likely in the western Dakotas through the evening with the passage of the system. Wind gusts approaching 40mph will be likely in these areas with breezy conditions expanding through the remainder of the Dakotas into western MN. Winds will be lighter heading into tomorrow, but still be aware of breezy conditions in the eastern Dakotas and southern MN.
