1-5-18 Northern Plains: Tracking a few light precipitation chances… otherwise quiet pattern.

Video:

Good Friday Morning!

Take a look at the current temperatures across the Northern Plains this morning. We have quite the spread with temperatures as cold as -30 in parts of Northern Minnesota and a few upper 20 readings in western South Dakota.

The warmer temperatures will slowly migrate east this weekend and lead to above freezing temperatures for much of the Dakotas on Sunday! Take a look at the temperature trends from now until Sunday Afternoon:

We’re entering into a fairly quiet pattern over the next several days for the Northern Plains. We do have three pieces of energy to watch that could put down some light precipitation this weekend. The first is will move early Saturday and could produce some freezing drizzle in portions of North Dakota and South Dakota Saturday Morning and into Sunday. Overall, very little accumulation is likely, but some slick spots could form as temperatures will still be in the single digits to teens.

The other pieces of energy will move through late Saturday and into early Sunday. A light rain/snow/freezing rain mix could form for a brief time in Southern South Dakota but accumulations look very light at this time. The other piece of energy will scrape the northern edge of Minnesota and put down some light snow accumulations.

A little bit of a re-inforcing shot of cold air will follow on Sunday, but no where near as cold as much of the area has seen the past week. In fact, over the next few weeks, temperatures will be above normal for the entire Northern Plains the next week.

Have a great weekend!
