Video (7:00):
Synopsis: Good Thursday Morning everyone! Yesterday’s disturbance has moved south of the state after producing a light dusting for most areas. Lake effect snow is ongoing for several Northern Indiana counties and will continue through late Saturday. A weak disturbance could produce some snow showers on extreme Southwest Indiana overnight and into tomorrow morning. However, the next high impact system for much of the state will come late this Sunday and into Monday.
The lake effect snow in Northern Indiana will likely put down several inches of snow and with gusty winds, travel impacts and visibility issues are likely over the next few days. Here’s a look at our updated snowfall map through Saturday evening:
As we discussed in previous updates, we are seeing the effects of a reinforcing shot of arctic air behind yesterday’s front. Temperatures this morning are below zero in portions of Central Indiana with the heaviest snow pack and we look to drop below zero the next two mornings for much of the northern half of Indiana. However, as our late weekend/early next week system begins to ramp up, warm air will flood the area Sunday allowing for a mixed bag of wintry precipitation.
Models have begun to converge on an idea for the late weekend/early next week system and the potential for a mixed bag of precipitation is looking likely especially for central and southern portions of the state. Although, big differences remain between models on the timing and intensity of this system. Details will have to be ironed out as we work closer to this event, but accumulation of snowfall, rain and other frozen precipitation is possible. However, regardless of a warmer influx of air in central and southern portions of the state, ground and pavement temperatures will likely stay below freezing thanks to the last several days of cold and snow. This will create problems in areas that see liquid precipitation and it certainly increases the probability that freezing rain could occur in this system. Here’s a look at the European model’s simulated radar from late Sunday into Monday afternoon:
Overall, models have trended a bit cooler over the past severals runs and we will be watching future trends on this system closely the next few days and put out updates as necessary. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out. Have a wonderful Thursday.
