Video (4:45):
Good Tuesday Morning!
We are watching an area of light snow that is working across portions of Minnesota this morning. This snow will move off to the east and potential produce some accumulating snowfall especially for portions of Northern Minnesota today and into this evening.
This system will also produce some very strong winds. We have wind advisories in effect throughout much of North Dakota. Expect sustained winds of 30MPH with gusts as high as 55MPH into the afternoon as we get a southwest wind to filter in much warmer air into much of the Northern Plains.
It does look like there will be two waves of precipitation with this system, one along the warm front this morning and into the afternoon and one along the cold front tonight. Here’s a look at the simulated radar over the next 30 hours. I do think we see a light coating as the cold front passes portions of South Dakota and Minnesota, but the heaviest snow will fall in Northeast Minnesota.
I wouldn’t rule out 1-2″ with isolated 3″ amounts in extreme Northern and Northeast Minnesota. I do think the dynamics are there to support some heavier bands within this swath of snow especially as it slows down a bit over Eastern Minnesota. We are also watching a potential quick-hitting band of snow that could put down a quick coating to a half inch in portions of South Dakota and Minnesota overnight along the cold front that will pass through the area.
This wave will work east of the area by tomorrow morning, but we do have a weak piece of energy along an arctic front that could produce some light snow showers and a dusting tomorrow in portions of North Dakota.
Behind this wave, temperature will plummet to below zero for much of the area with dangerously cold wind chills on Thursday morning.
We are watching the potential for two stronger waves late Friday into Saturday and late Saturday into Sunday. The latter wave looks like it could pack a punch in South Dakota. Latest data is very favorable for a band of heavy snow through that area.
Be sure to reach out if you have any questions and have a great Tuesday!
