1-3-18 Central Plains: Entering a quiet pattern to end the week. B.

Video (7 min):

Good Wednesday Morning!

Some scattered snow showers and flurries moved through portions of Iowa and Missouri late last night into early this morning. Behind this snow is a reinforcing shot of cold air especially for portions of Iowa and Missouri while Western Kansas and Nebraska begin to warm. Here’s a look at the simulated temperatures over the next 24 hours. Portions of Western Nebraska and Kansas could see highs in the 40s this afternoon as a warmer air mass begins to shift east.

Overall, the end of this week will be fairly quiet for most of the Central Plains with a slow, general warming trend for Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri. Iowa will stay in the icebox for most of the week, but temperatures begin to rise into the weekend as a more potent system draws in warm air. However, we do have a couple of weak pieces of energy that will dive into portions of Iowa and Missouri late Thursday and into Friday. With cold temperatures, we would not be surprised for the atmosphere to squeeze out some very light snow showers or flurries, but overall, not much impact expected.

The next system after this will come Sunday evening into Monday. This storm will likely bring widespread precipitation to the Central Plains other than western portions of Kansas. Models are still inconsistent with a solution for this storm, but Kansas and Nebraska looks to stay above freezing and see mostly rain. We will have to watch portions of Nebraska and Iowa for potential accumulating snowfall.

Overall, temperatures will moderate in the western Central Plains over the next week, while Eastern Iowa and Missouri remain well below normal.
