1-24-18 Northern INDOT: Light drizzle/snow continues today with black ice a continued concern…details here. K.

Good Wednesday Morning.

We are continuing to track light snow showers and freezing drizzle that could put down a light coating across the northern Districts as we get into the morning commute hours. The latest simulated radar is hinting at areas of snow and drizzle hanging around into late afternoon and evening before pushing east out of the state. A couple snow squalls can’t be ruled out as well, where this set-up low visibility and pockets of heavy snow ~0.5-1″ will be possible; it’s key to note these likely won’t be widespread but more isolated. Temps fall back below freezing overnight, any residual moisture on the surface where left untreated will again refreeze and create another black ice scenario into Thursday AM. High pressure sets in Thursday into Friday raising temps into the 40s bringing some sunshine as well, in the video we target our next shot of rain showers getting into the day on Saturday. If you have any questions please let us know, stay safe out there! -Kirk

Latest simulated radar as we go throughout the day…we expect a mix of drizzle and snow showers throughout this event with pockets of snow squalls being possible as well before winding down late afternoon into the evening east:

Temperatures could linger at or below freezing throughout the majority of the day in the northern two-thirds of the state which will keep the threat for black ice high on untreated pavements.

As we discussed last night, precipitation will be off and on and precipitation type will vary between drizzle, freezing drizzle and snow. However, the latest HRRR is hinting at some light snow accumulations from snow showers and squalls into the afternoon; localized 0.5-1″ in pockets will be possible.
