Thursday Weather Package.

Good morning and Happy Thursday!

Forecast focus for today/tonight will be in SE IA/NW IL as a cold front comes down from the northern plains. Latest hi-res data hinting that storms tonight could have some wind with them along with the heavy rain and vivid lightning display expected. This is the same front that will bring t;storms to the eastern half of the forecast area tomorrow evening and also usher in cooler and less humid air for the weekend. The map below shows where I believe a few strong storms are possible tonight between the hours of 9pm-2am. If you have any questions please let me know.

Also I wanted to explain to you the relationship of dew point temperatures and humidity. I was told this morning that humidity is a big factor this time of the year. This year certainly has been VERY humid no doubt about that but I do see relief in sight mid August and beyond as of right now. Relative humidity of 100% indicates the dew point is equal to the current temperature and that the air is maximally saturated with water. When the moisture content remains constant and temperature increases, relative humidity decreases. Dewpoint is related to the quantity of moisture in the air while relative humidity is related to how close the air is to saturation. Essentially IMO it would be wise to us dew point forecasts vs RH forecasts when planning your schedules. Basically the dew point is the measure of moisture content in the atmosphere, aka dew point is the actual measurement of moisture in the atmosphere VS humidity is the measurement to tell you how close you are to saturation.   Dew points this time of year:

55-60 considered very comfortable and air being rather dry.

60-65 would be borderline uncomfortable and a somewhat saturated air mass.

65-70 becomes very uncomfortable and air is very saturated.

70+ is a tropical air mass. This limits night time lows from falling much below 70 as the loaded moisture content in the atmosphere is very hard to “cool off” at night.

(Hope this helps)
