Good morning! We are tracking some light freezing rain across northern CT, NW RI, and central Massachusetts this morning causing some locally icing conditions, but the bigger item of interest is a significant winter storm that will impact the area late tonight through the day on Thursday. Here’s the radar as of 6:30 AM.
Today will be a warm “calm before the storm” type day with temperatures quite mild ahead of a cold front for most. Temperatures will be in the 40s and 50s during the day, but will fall back quickly this evening. This is important as precipitation moves in late in the evening west and overnight east. Here’s a look at temperatures this afternoon into this evening. Notice the quick drop off after sunset.
A mix of rain and snow will move across PA this evening and move into southern New England overnight. As colder air rushes in and temperatures fall, expect any rain to quickly turn to snow for most. Here’s a visualization of that via the projected radar tonight through Thursday.
For simplicity, here is the forecast arrival time of snow overnight tonight.
Snow will start slushy then as colder air works in, should dry out and become easy to move for most. Here’s the expected snow consistency throughout the storm.
Temperatures will start close to freezing for many, then as cold air works in on the backside of the storm, they should fall rapidly tomorrow morning. Here are the forecasted temperatures Thursday.
Here’s a look at our snow map for the event as a whole. Snow intensity and impacts will be worst likely between about 3am and 10am across PA, and worst between 6am and 3pm across southern New England before tapering off from west to east during the afternoon hours. The projected radar above can also help with when the heaviest will occur for your exact area.
In addition to all of this, a little bit of additional light snow is possible Friday evening into early Saturday. It won’t be a big storm, but some places can see 1-3″. I’ll have updates on this during this afternoon’s update and again tomorrow.
Today’s video discusses the storm in detail. Have a great day! ~Ed
