Key Points: May 5, 2017

Synopsis: Good morning and happy Friday! We are tracking some rain and thunderstorms for overnight tonight across eastern Minnesota and Wisconsin, otherwise a dry and warmer weekend is on tap for most of the region. As an upper level ridge moves in early next week, some light shower and storm chances return, but overall the big storm will be the warmth and some favorable planting conditions on the weather side of things. Our first rain chance comes Monday into Tuesday, then uncertainty grows toward the end of the week. It will be highly dependent on how the pattern shakes out which I discuss in the video below. Have a great Friday and weekend!

  • Our first chance of rain comes tonight into early Saturday across eastern areas.

  • Total rainfall will largely be under 0.50″ for most places.

  • As move into next week, here’s a look at the upper pattern, leading to some shower and storm chances.

  • Here’s a look at the European model for next week, highlighting rain chances across the region.

  • Warmth will also be a big story this week across the Dakotas with temperatures 8-12°F above normal. Eastern areas still look well below normal. While shower and thunderstorm chances will be around, precipitation looks slightly below normal overall.

  • Warmer conditions look to continue into week 2 as well. Here’s our forecast.

  • Looking a bit further out into weeks 3 and 4, the new European weeklies came out last night. They are highlighting warmer times to end May and open June, similar to what we discussed in our long range thoughts yesterday.

Confidence and Risks:

  • Above average confidence for warm conditions west, cool conditions east next week along with variable precipitation chances.
  • Average confidence in where rains line up late next week. Most data is south of the region, but uncertainty still remains.
  • Above average confidence in warmth continuing into week 2.
  • Increasing confidence in warmer times to close out May, especially east.
