Key Points: May 12, 2017

Synopsis: Good Friday morning! Dry conditions continue across the region this morning, setting us up for what looks like a very nice weekend! With that being said, temperatures are going to heat up into early next week with shower and thunderstorm threats returning as early as Saturday night into Sunday across the Dakotas, and Monday into Tuesday elsewhere. Active times continue through next week with cooler conditions making a comeback toward the end of next week. Have a great weekend!

  • A quiet end to the work week is expected with dry conditions lasting into the beginning of the weekend. Here’s a look at the upper pattern.

  • Shower and thunderstorm risks return as early as Saturday night across the Dakotas on the periphery of the ridge.

  • A more significant thunderstorm threat comes Monday night into Tuesday across Minnesota and Wisconsin. This likely lasts into Wednesday as well.

  • Total rainfall just through midweek next week will be thunderstorm dependent, but those who get in on the action could a significant amount of rain.

  • Temperatures next week look quite warm, but a cooler regime likely takes over in week 2, especially across the western portions of the forecast area. Eastern areas likely stay above normal.

  • 10 day rainfall from the European shows the battle zone in between the warm and cold and how it’ll help aid in heavier rains. But also note there will be haves and have nots depending on thunderstorm placement.

Confidence and Risks:

  • Above average confidence in a dry start to the weekend with warm conditions.
  • Above average confidence in thunderstorms developing Saturday night into Sunday west and spreading east through early next week.
  • Increasing confidence in a battle zone between warm and cold setting up across the region into week 2 and possibly beyond.
