Good afternoon! In this update, we will take a look at the thunderstorm potential and heavy rain risks over the next couple of days.
Current radar shows showers and storms moving east across the Plains.
A Flash Flood Watch has been issued for the southern half of Iowa, northern Missouri, and western Illinois. The atmosphere is loaded with moisture, and potential is there for local 2-3″ per hour rainfall rates along with training of thunderstorms which can create locally higher amounts. Note a heat advisory to the south, where heat indices will exceed 100º.
Heading through the afternoon, showers and storms will continue to move eastward with daytime heating aiding in increasing storm coverage over eastern Iowa, Missouri, and western Illinois.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed a marginal risk for severe storms across the central Plains through tonight. Isolated damaging wind gusts will be the greatest threat along with flash flooding.
Below is a look at “precipitable water” values into tonight. This is essentially a look at how much moisture is in the atmosphere. Models are indicating values of 2-3″. This adds concern for locally very heavy rain amounts.
Heading through Thursday, this storm system will continue to push east and south with showers and storms working across the Ohio Valley.
The latest severe weather outlook places areas south of I-70 across IL/IN/OH and all of KY under a slight risk on Thursday. Damaging wind is the biggest threat along with flash flooding.
Rain totals next 60 hours….1-4″+ rain totals are possible as this system moves through. The latest data has trended the heaviest totals further south. Don’t focus on the exact placement of heaviest totals, the overall idea will be for pockets of very heavy rain over the general area circled.
