9-24-18 Northern Plains Forecast: Watching areas of showers and perhaps a couple storms to work through the region through Tuesday…frost risks likely this week. I.

Today’s Video:

Good morning everyone! We are currently tracking scattered rains stretching from northern MN southwestward into southwestern SD as of 9am CDT. These rains will continue to follow along a cold front that is progressing through the region today. Additional showers and storms will lift into the western Dakotas as the day progresses, especially late afternoon and evening.

Simulated radar through 7am CDT Tuesday: Convection associated with the cold front draped across the region currently will work eastward through the day. Enough instability may build up into the evening hours for some storms to develop within this convection across eastern/southern MN. This disturbance will lift out of MN tonight with a new disturbance pushing into the Dakotas into the evening hours. The rains (showers and storms) associated with this disturbance will spread eastward through the night tonight with areas of showers remaining across the central/eastern Dakotas and southern MN by 7am CDT Tuesday. The greatest coverage of rains will be located over southern SD tomorrow morning.

Simulated radar from 7am CDT Tuesday through 7am CDT Wednesday: Steadier rain will work its way ENE across eastern SD and into central/southern MN during the day Tuesday. Most activity will be out of SD by 1pm CDT. A pulse of energy will drift southeastward through the day as well, bringing widely scattered showers and storms across ND and northern SD, impacting western MN during the evening hours. This disturbance will likely weaken as it progresses eastward Tuesday night across southern MN.

Total rainfall through 7am CDT Wednesday: A general 0.25-0.5″ of rain is expected across eastern SD into most of MN. Locally higher amounts are possible with any heavier showers and/or storms. Rains will be more scattered to the northwest of these areas.

Additional lighter rains will work into the northern areas and eventually more southward Wednesday night into the day Thursday. Some snowflakes may mix in with the shower activity Thursday night across the far northern areas and into far western SD.

Here’s a look at the 7-day rainfall from the European Model: The best chance for higher rainfall totals will be across northern MN, southeastern MN and into western SD.

The warmest air in the region today will be found across southern/eastern MN where temperatures in the 70s will be common. By Tuesday, most areas will have temperatures that range from the 40s in a few spots to to mid 60s. Overnight lows will drop into the 40s and perhaps the 30s in a few spots tonight, leading to frost risks (mainly across ND, far western SD and MN. Lows will drop even further into Wednesday morning where widespread 30s are likely. Frost and freeze risks are on the table.

Even cooler weather will work into the region this upcoming weekend with many locations dropping into the 30s. This will continue the frost and freeze risks.

Here’s a look at dew points over the next four days: Higher humidity levels will be draped across portions of MN today before most areas experience lower humidity into Tuesday as the cold front brings down Canadian air.
