9-21-18 Northern Plains Forecast: Quieter today…watching scattered showers this weekend. I.

Today’s Video:

Good morning everyone! There are currently some lingering showers in northeastern MN but these should lift out during the early afternoon hours. Another wave will bring scattered showers to the far northern areas Saturday, possibly picking up in intensity into the afternoon hours across far northern ND and far northern MN. Heading into Sunday, these rains will shift north as a warm front lifts into the region. During this time, we can’t rule out a few snowflakes mixing in but won’t amount to anything.  Simulated radar from 4am CDT Saturday through 1pm CDT Sunday:

A line of showers and storms will likely progress through the region Monday, mostly exiting the region late Monday night into Tuesday morning. Some of these storms may be strong, especially across southeastern MN overnight Monday into Tuesday. A few lingering areas of showers may persist across the Dakotas into Tuesday morning.

Another round of showers and storms is likely from a strong cold front beginning Wednesday and lasting through Thursday. After the passage of this front, even cooler air will funnel into the region.

Here’s a look at the 7-day total rainfall from the European Model: A majority of the rains through this period will clip the far northern portions of the area and then MN later next week.

High pressure is beginning to work into the area behind the front that affected the region yesterday, leading to a drier day for most today with only a weak disturbance clipping the far northern areas Saturday. The cold front passage has ushered in much cooler temperatures with some frost risks (possible freeze) especially in the southern half of MN tonight and the far northern areas Saturday night.

Here’s a look at dew points over the next four days: Much lower humidity levels have infiltrated the region. A slight uptick in dew points is expected over the southeastern areas Sunday and especially Monday.

Here’s a look at winds over the next four days:

Here’s a look at the city charts for Bismarck, Minneapolis, Fargo and Sioux Falls over the next 15 days: Please note that this is an ensemble which averages/smoothes the numbers.
