8-9-19 Northern Plains: More rain chances coming through early next week. Details here.V

Good Friday Morning!

Here is today’s video:

Below is estimated rainfall over the past 24 hours. Much of the N Plains stayed dry with the exception being the W halves of ND and SD. W SD saw the heavier of the two rains, however there were only a select few places that received over 1 inch of rain. MN stayed totally dry:

A current look at radar shows that we are still watching some showers and storms working their way across the Dakota’s as the morning rolls on:

Below is simulated radar guidance from 1 PM CT this afternoon until 1 AM CT Saturday morning. We think Central and Eastern South Dakota have the highest risk for severe weather this afternoon and into the overnight hours:

Below is the area that we are currently favoring for the highest chances of severe weather. As mentioned in the video, all forms of severe weather are on the table. Flash flooding, large hail, damaging wind gusts, and isolated tornadoes can all occur this afternoon and evening:

Saturday looks to bring more chances for Northern ND and W SD. The best chances for N ND look to come during the late morning hours Sat and into the afternoon, while W SD is looking at the best chance of rain coming closer to Sat evening. Below is simulated radar from 7 AM CT Saturday morning until 7 PM CT Saturday evening:

A look at rainfall guidance out through 7 PM CT Saturday evening. We certainly think that flash flooding is a risk in the Central and Eastern parts of SD. There is certainly the potential to see a base of 1 to 2 inches as shown in the image below with the potential for some locally higher amounts in the 3 to 4 inch range:

Some thoughts as we work into the beginning of the next work week. We are watching for more rounds of storms to work across the Northern Plains as we think that given the current the upper level pattern, we can see more of an active period into the middle of next week:

Below is rainfall guidance from 7 PM CT Saturday evening until 7 PM CT Tuesday evening:
