8-9-18 Northern Plains: Dry, hot pattern persists through the weekend. B.

Today’s Video:

Good Thursday morning everyone. Not a lot going on this morning across the region. Satellite imagery shows a very hazy start to the day as the jet stream ushers wildfire smoke from the West Coast into the area.

A piece of energy will work into SW South Dakota this afternoon, and it could lead to a few isolated showers or storms between 4 and 9PM CDT this afternoon:

Here’s a look at your high temperatures from yesterday… we saw a few readings of over 100F in South Dakota!

These hot temperatures will persist the next several days with widespread upper-90s in the Dakotas likely seeing more 100F readings:

Here’s a look at dew point temperatures the next 4 days:

Here’s a look at winds over the next 4 days:

We will need to watch for perhaps a Red Flag Warning on Saturday and Sunday due to very dry air and increasing wind gusts.

The next real chance of rainfall in the region will come as we work into Tuesday. The GFS tries to spawn some storms in North Dakota on Monday, but given dry air in place, we’re thinking it’s likely a bit too robust. Some showers and storms could develop Tuesday along a cold front, though high pressure pushes these out quickly:
