8-3-18 Northern Plains: A few strong storms this evening… heat in the Dakotas today. B.

Today’s Video:

Good Friday morning everyone! We have showers and storms developing along a boundary along the border of North and South Dakota. We also have some scattered showers in Western South Dakota and some storms developing with some energy in Central Minnesota. These showers along the border likely continue to develop into the daytime hours and scattered storms across Central Minnesota are possible much of the day:

As instability builds this afternoon, stronger thunderstorms will begin to develop especially in Eastern South Dakota and Central Minnesota. There is a slight risk for severe weather, with a few severe storms that could contain large hail and damaging winds:

Note, rain risks likely persist for Southern and eventually Eastern Minnesota for much of the overnight hours and even into tomorrow. This will allow for decent rain accumulations especially along the border of South Dakota and Minnesota. Here’s a look at rainfall through 7AM tomorrow:

One change from yesterday’s forecast is the second line of storms tomorrow are looking much weaker due to lack of instability related to more widespread coverage of rain in Southeastern portions of the Northern Plains overnight. However, we could see scattered storms overnight in the Central Dakotas (see radar loop above) before a few clusters of storms develop late Saturday (shown below):

Another weak wave will likely scrape southern portions of South Dakota and Minnesota Sunday and into Monday before the front completely passes and drier and cooler weather prevails into next week:
