8-28-18 Northern Plains: Additional rainfall in Southern Minnesota today… quieter tomorrow and Thursday. B.

Today’s Video:

Good Tuesday morning everyone! We have additional rainfall working into portions of SE SD and Southern Minnesota this morning. These showers likely continue to build this morning and into the afternoon hours. Eventually SE Minnesota will become a bigger focus for these rain risks:

Here’s a look at the simulated radar into 1PM today. Note the model is underdone with rainfall especially in S Central and SW Minnesota – a continued theme as strong forcing from the from and upper-level forcing leads to more widespread showers than modeled. Rain will will pick up in SE Minnesota later this afternoon where some could see an additional 0.5-1.5″+ of rainfall. Further to the west areas could pick up 0.1-0.5″ with localized higher totals:

Cannot rule out an isolated strong/severe storm with wind the main threat in the far SE counties in Minnesota, but for the most part the threat should remain to the south. Cannot rule out an isolated storm with some large hail given high instability in far SE Minnesota and NE Iowa this afternoon.

A weak disturbance leads to some very light showers late this evening and into tomorrow morning from Western ND and Northern ND, but generally amounts will be 0.1″ or less of rainfall.

Conditions will dry out and the sun likely returns tomorrow and Thursday as higher pressure dominates the weather. Cool temperatures today will gradually warm back up into later this week, but overnight lows the next two nights could drop into the upper 30s and 40s in spots!

Another wave of energy and a front will start to work in overnight Thursday and into Friday. This likely brings additional heavy rain risks for Southern Minnesota with more scattered storm activity in the Eastern Dakotas and Northern Minnesota:
