Today’s Video:
Good Monday morning everyone! We have a very active day across the area with the chance of severe storms especially in SE Minnesota this afternoon and evening. We already have light rain working into Western North Dakota and Southern South Dakota and this rain likely continues into mid-day.
Here’s a look at the simulated radar into 1PM. Showers likely continue in NW SD and Western ND and the showers this morning in Southern South Dakota build and push east.
Between 1 PM and 7PM we likely get storms to really build near the SD/MN border and push east beginning the severe weather threat. This includes hail, damaging winds and a few tornadoes. However, the biggest threat is likely just east into SE and Eastern Minnesota between 5PM and 10PM this evening:
Here’s a look at the storms as they work from Central Minnesota to Eastern Minnesota and congeal into a line with a high straight-line damaging wind threat:
Those within the enhanced risk certainly are at play for damaging winds, large hail and isolated tornadoes, but the highest threat is outlined in pink. This area will certainly need to be on watch for the strongest severe wind gusts in storms this evening.
With a very strong low-level jet in place, a flooding rain risk can develop in SE Minnesota with heavy rain and storms that continue into ~3/4 AM CDT. Here’s a look at rain over the next 24 hours:
We can continue to see some scattered showers especially in the Eastern Dakotas and Minnesota into tomorrow morning, however the better chance will come with a wave of energy in South Dakota and along the thermal gradient in SE Minnesota tomorrow afternoon:
As the front fully passes, conditions should clear out for tomorrow night allowing the temperature to drop into the lower 40s and upper 30s in some spots:
Here’s a look at high temperatures over the next 4 days:

After a quiet Wednesday, we could see some rain chances increase late Thursday, with better chances Friday and into the weekend as the thermal gradient favorable for rain and storms increases once again. Here’s a look at the 7 day rainfall:
