8-2-18 Northern Plains: Heat builds in the Dakotas today and tomorrow… more widespread storm risks increase tomorrow. B.

Today’s Video:

Good Thursday morning everyone! Overall, a quiet start to the morning. A few isolated showers in Western North Dakota likely continue to weaken as we head into the daytime hours. We will need to watch a piece of energy that will dive into NE ND and NW Minnesota later today and produce some isolated showers:

Another piece of energy pushes through overnight tonight and pushes from Central ND into NE SD. I do think the lingering light rain can continue in Northern SD into tomorrow.

More frequent thunderstorms likely develop late tomorrow afternoon and into tomorrow evening for Eastern North Dakota and Western Minnesota. Cannot rule out a few strong to severe storms with this as high instability and quick change in temperatures with height will lead to an isolated hail and wind threat:

Radar between 10AM and 7PM tomorrow:

Radar between 7PM and 4AM tomorrow:Given a strong low-level jet and high moisture content in the atmosphere, thinking that rain risks can continue overnight in Southern Minnesota. Slightly higher rain amounts that higher-resolution data suggests is certainly possible. Note, out to the west, another round of energy will start to push east overnight. These storms will continue to develop and push into the Eastern Dakotas and eventually Minnesota by mid-day:

These storms likely push out by Sunday morning and there could be quite a bit of dry time on Sunday other than some scattered showers. However, we’ll have to carefully watch a few pieces of energy to the south. One of which likely clips the area Sunday night into Monday:
