8-18-18 KS/NE/SD/ND Afternoon Update: Eying scattered showers/storms, possibly strong, to lift into the High Plains and points further east this afternoon through tonight. I.

Good afternoon again everyone! This update will discuss the strong storm threat across the Western Plains this afternoon into tonight. Shown below is an updated version of the Severe Storm Outlook for today with an attached brief synopsis of what to expect.

Areas of showers and storms will begin to spread into the far western portions of SD and NE between 1-3pm MDT with further development expected shortly thereafter along a narrow, broken line stretching from southwest to north-central ND. KS will be the last state to work in strong storm activity from the west, but will likely have the biggest threat as an organized cluster shapes-up and progresses southeastward across the southwest portions of the state. Shower and storm activity will remain scattered from western KS northward through western NE/SD into portions of southern ND. Parts of this broken extent of storms may fall apart at times but rebuild with additional lighter rains through the evening and overnight hours. This stretch of convection will also push east through the night while wrap-around rains begin to impact portions of southwestern ND into western SD. By the end of the loop shown below (8am MDT Sunday) scattered, broken convection will still persist from southern ND, SD, central/eastern NE, and central KS. The severe weather threat will likely dwindle through the nighttime hours tonight.

Total rainfall through 8am MDT Sunday: A large swath of SD, western/central NE, and western KS will receive 0.1-0.75″ of rain with localized pockets of 1-2″+ where the heaviest storms track. Due to these rains being scattered/broken in nature, a few areas in the above mentioned places may receive very little rainfall. Rains will be more isolated to widely scattered across ND. However, a few areas there may pick up ~1″ of rain. As discussed in the previous update to your specified region, these rains will continue to progress eastward beyond this time, with additional impacts to the eastern portions of these states during the day Sunday.

If you have any questions do not hesitate to reach out! Have a great rest of your day!
