Good evening everyone! Temperatures continue to cool off across central and western ND as showers with embedded storms in association with a cold front work across the area. The radar loop shown below is current as of 5:10pm CDT. Out ahead of this boundary, compressional heating has allowed widespread 90s to remain across southeast ND, western/central MN, and most of SD.
The areas of showers and embedded thunderstorms will continue to progress eastward across ND through the evening hours, waning in coverage some before an uptick in development is expected overnight tonight and into tomorrow morning across south-central/southeast ND, west-central MN, and far northeast SD (A result of the front approaching a more moisture rich environment). Isolated showers/storms are possible in northern MN late this evening into tonight. Additional upper-level energy with storms attached will lift into far western SD/southwest ND after 4am CDT Tuesday morning. Simulated radar through 7am CDT Tuesday is shown below.
Storms across southeast ND, northeast SD, west-central MN Tuesday morning will sag southward through the remainder of the morning and into the afternoon hours. More flare-ups in convection as a result of added daytime heating is possible in central/eastern SD and southern MN during the afternoon hours Tuesday. The front will continue to migrate southward during the evening and early overnight hours Tuesday, pushing most storm coverage associated with the front out of the region Tuesday night. An upper-level low over the Central Plains will phase with the boundary Tuesday night, providing isolated shower/storm activity to far southern MN. Another disturbance will work into western SD around 12am MDT Wednesday, which will have the threat for gusty winds. This potential cluster of storms will follow a moisture gradient in place from northwest to southeast across western SD into Wednesday morning. Simulated radar from 7am CDT Tuesday through 7am CDT Wednesday is shown below.
Here’s a look at total rainfall through 7am CDT Wednesday: Many areas across the region will miss out on rains through this period, especially most of ND into northern MN.
If you have any questions do not hesitate to reach out! Have a great evening!
