Good Saturday morning! A vast majority of the region today will be waking up to plentiful sunshine with high level clouds approaching from the west across western ND. High pressure will keep the region dry today but will change this evening into the overnight as pieces of upper-level energy work into the area along the northern periphery of the high. The surface cold front associated with this energy will initiate storms across northeast CO/southeast MT this evening before pushing into northwestern SD/western ND late evening (~9-11pm CDT) and central/eastern ND and possibly far northern SD during the overnight. Additional storm development this evening ahead of these storms across eastern ND into northwestern MN is possible but will remain more limited in coverage due to the strength of a capping inversion in the region. Large hail, damaging winds, and an isolated tornado or two may accompany these storms across the region tonight into tomorrow morning.
Simulated radar from 5pm CDT this evening through 1pm Sunday afternoon: Storms in northwest SD/southwest ND will push east late this evening and during the overnight across ND before impacting northern/central MN Sunday morning. These storms will exit the region by early afternoon with leftover showers and embedded thunderstorms possible behind the main activity across ND and northern MN during the morning and early afternoon.
Strong storms are once again possible across MN and the eastern Dakotas Sunday with new storm development along the cold front stretching from northeast MN into east-central SD. Isolated damaging winds and large hail are possible with these storms during the afternoon and evening hours before this cluster of storms weakens overnight.
Simulated radar from 1pm CDT Sunday through 1pm CDT Monday: A line of storms develops across north-central MN into the eastern Dakotas pushing southeast with the cold front before dissipating overnight in southern MN. More energy will work into the western Dakotas early Monday bringing increased storm risks to that part of the area again.
