7-30-18 Northern Plains: A few scattered storms today… heat returns later this week. B.

Today’s Video:

Good Monday morning. Overall, it’s quiet across much of the area today other than a few lingering showers in South Central SD. These likely continue to weaken and push south over the next few hours:

We will build in enough instability near an upper-level low to allow for some scattered showers and storms to develop in E. SD and Southern Minnesota this afternoon between 2PM – 8PM during peak heating. These likely die off as temperatures cool off later this evening. Here’s a look at the simulated radar and total rainfall this afternoon. Generally, very scattered light amounts – possibly 0.1-0.25″ if under a heavier pop-up:

Other than this, fairly quiet over the next 36 hours before a weak front will push into the area late tomorrow and into Wednesday morning. This could produce scattered showers and storms – especially in NE Minnesota as we head into Wednesday morning:

Cannot rule out some re-development of scattered storms Wednesday afternoon in Southern Minnesota, but generally looks like light amounts at this time. Higher pressure will move in behind that front, along with another shot of cooler air for eastern portions of the Northern Plains. Though, we could warm back up to near 90 tomorrow ahead of the front in North Dakota.

As heat and southwest flow builds late week, a more active storm track likely develops for the Eastern Dakotas and Minnesota. Storm chances could develop late Friday, late Saturday and late Sunday:

Here’s a look at 7-day total rainfall:

Here’s a look at the European model temperature forecasts for the next 10 days (note the model is probably a bit overdone with high temperatures late this week especially in Pierre):
