7-26-19 South Dakota: Short Term Update Through Saturday Evening.V.

Good Friday afternoon!

A peek at radar shows that we are looking at some scattered activity in the South Central parts of the state right along the Nebraska border:

Below is simulated upper level energy from now until 7 PM CT Saturday evening. Tonight the overwhelming majority of the state looks to stay dry, but we have to watch the extreme Southern portion of SD due to some storms popping mainly in Nebraska, like we saw on radar. Anything that falls looks to be pretty isolated and not widespread. Our main focus comes tomorrow afternoon and really in the evening as we see some strong (darker shades of red) areas of upper level energy working into the state from the SW, near the end of this loop:

A look at simulated radar from 4 PM CT until 7 AM CT tomorrow. We think that this model does a good job depicting the location and intensity of these storms. As mentioned, the focus should stay in NE, but the extreme SW section of SD can see some very isolated activity:

Highs tomorrow look to be in the upper 80s statewide with cooler temperatures in the upper 70s/low 80s where we see the impacts of rain cooled air that limit our daytime highs:

Modeled radar from 1 PM CT until 7 CT Saturday evening. The potential for some of these storms to be strong or severe is certainly on the table. The three main severe weather parameters we are watching for are damaging winds, large hail, and isolated flooding possible where the heaviest of storms set up.  An isolated tornado cant be completely ruled out, but this does not look to be likely or anything widespread at all. This area of energy will work from the SW to NE and become more widespread as your Saturday evening goes on:

Rainfall guidance out through 7 PM CT tomorrow evening. We think that by 7 PM CT tomorrow night, the highest amounts of rainfall will be centered on the SW part of SD between a very isolated chance tonight and the rain tomorrow evening looking to impact this area of the state first :

As always, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to us at [email protected] ! Enjoy the rest of your Friday!
