7-2-18 Northern Plains PM Update: Strong storms expected to develop later today into tonight with an additional round late tomorrow…details here! I.

Good Monday afternoon! We continue to have a few areas of light showers as of 1:40pm CDT across southeastern ND into west-central MN. This batch of light rain gradually weakens as it pushes northeast through the afternoon.

A frontal boundary draped from eastern SD to northern MN with an unstable environment out ahead of the front will help to initiate storms across the area between 5-7pm CDT that push east-northeast across eastern SD into north-central MN overnight. The greatest coverage of these storms will exist over central/north-central MN this evening and overnight. This region will be at risk for large hail, damaging winds, and an isolated tornado or two. Further west more energy from MT will migrate east into the western Dakotas and spark showers and storms late tonight that track east-northeast across ND and northern SD overnight and persist into the morning hours Tuesday. Far northwestern MN is at play to see the remnants of these storms during the morning hours. Threats with these storms also include large hail, damaging winds, and an isolated tornado. Simulated radar increments through tomorrow morning: While not to be taken for verbatim…It gives a general idea of what to expect.

SPC Severe Weather Outlook for these two areas of storms set to impact the region: Strong storms are at play through the evening hours tonight.

Heading into the late hours of tomorrow another disturbance will lift northeastward into the region bringing with it the threat for more strong to severe thunderstorms. Supercell-structured storms are possible tomorrow evening with large hail and isolated tornadoes before the storms congeal into a large cluster, becoming more of a wind threat, pushing east-northeast. More development is possible along the south-end of this line overnight Tuesday into Wednesday across eastern SD into southern MN than what is currently shown.
