Good Thursday afternoon! Multiple clusters of showers and storms are affecting portions of the Central Plains from eastern IA southward to central MO westward to north-central KS with a gap in eastern KS as of 12:45pm CDT. A few of these storms have become severe in the last couple of hours in central MO and north-central KS.
The SPC has highlighted portions of central/eastern IA, MO, and central/eastern KS for the threat of strong storms through the rest of today. A few of these storms have the potential to produce large hail, damaging winds, and/or an isolated tornado or two.
Due to the severe weather present in the region currently and for the rest of the afternoon and evening, National Weather Service offices in MO have issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch that is in effect until 9pm CDT for western and south-central MO. Counties under this watch are outlined below:
Another Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for portions of central and eastern KS in effect until 9pm CDT. Counties under this watch are outlined below:
Simulated radar through 2am CDT Friday: Showers and storms will continue to expand in coverage and work east through the afternoon and evening hours across central/eastern KS, eastern IA, and a large majority of MO. Another round of scattered storms may fire around 5pm CDT across central KS behind the current round impacting the area. This round will dive southeast through the evening hours exiting the region shortly after midnight. Isolated showers and storms are also possible in west-central NE this evening before weakening overnight. All storm activity with the exception of a few showers hanging back should cease across the region by 2am CDT tonight as instability weakens and the disturbance pushes east.
Total rainfall through 2am CDT Friday: Widespread rains of 0.5-1″ of rain with locally higher amounts possible across portions of central MO with pockets of 1″+ of rain where it storms in east-central KS through this evening and early overnight.
