7-16-18 Northern Plains Forecast: Scattered storm chances for the next few days…stronger system mid-week. B.

Today’s video:

Good Monday morning everyone! A majority of the region is starting their day with mostly sunny skies with central SD being the exception where cloud cover hangs across the area. It will become more active across southwestern SD and possibly central SD as scattered showers and storms are expected to develop over portions of southwestern SD this afternoon and evening and push SE out of the state by early tomorrow morning. A few of these storms may be severe with damaging winds and hail.

Elevated showers and storms are possible tonight along the cold front stretching from southeast ND/northeast SD into central MN. Most will stay dry but I can’t rule out some isolated locations receiving rain with a 30% storm coverage.

A slight threat for storms exists tomorrow afternoon as more upper-level energy lifts into western/southern SD. Storms that develop will follow along the moisture gradient towards the ESE through the evening hours.

Total rainfall through 7pm CDT Tuesday: Dry weather will prevail across a majority of the region with the best chance for showers and storms found over western/southern SD this afternoon and evening. Very isolated pockets of 0.5-1″ are possible where these storms develop and track across southwest SD.

A warm front will lift into the region late Tuesday into Wednesday bringing a better chance for showers and storms across SD and southern ND before pushing eastward into MN Thursday and exiting late Friday/early Saturday.

Total rainfall through the next 7 days: Southeastern SD and much of MN will see 1-1.5″ of rain with locally higher amounts possible in central MN with lighter amounts in ND and northern MN.

Here’s a look at the progression of temperatures over the next four days: A drier, cooler air mass as of late continues across the region. High temperatures will remain in the 70s for the northern portions of the area with low to mid 80s in SD and southern MN today. Tuesday through Wednesday will feature highs ranging from the upper 70s to mid 80s while Thursday will bring cooler weather to MN. Lows may dip near the upper 40s across the far northern areas with mostly 60s across the region by Thursday morning.

Here’s a look at dew points over the next four days: Comfortable humidity levels continue today and tomorrow, especially ND and northern MN, before moisture surges northward starting Wednesday. This will increase humidity to the region Wednesday and Thursday.
