7-15-18 Northern Plains Sunday Update: A more seasonable air mass builds into the region today with isolated storm chances continuing through Monday. I.

Good Sunday morning everyone! As of 10:20am CDT there is a broken wave of showers and storms impacting portions of west-central MN extending southwest through southwest SD.

HRRR Simulated radar through 8pm CDT this evening: The disturbance bringing showers and storms to portions of the area will lift eastward as the day progresses, pushing this convection into southern and eastern SD as well as central MN. Most model guidance slowly weakens this wave as it pushes eastward this afternoon and evening with only new scattered development possible (shortly after 12pm CDT) across northeast/central MN. Otherwise, I expect most rain chances to diminish or push south and east out of the area by 6pm CDT.

NAM3km simulated radar from 10am Monday through 1pm Tuesday: Overnight tonight into Monday morning will remain dry for a large majority of the region. Storm activity working in from WY late tonight will likely weaken during its approach into far western SD. Given the energy there I can’t rule out a couple isolated showers/storms in western SD during the late nighttime hours into early morning. An area to watch for some strong storms late Monday into early Tuesday morning is southwestern SD where a mixture of instability and decent vertical wind shear could allow some storms to produce gusty winds and small hail. The rest of the region will remain dry Monday.

Total rainfall through 7pm CDT Monday evening:

Here’s a look at the progression of temperatures over the next four days: A drier, cooler air mass has infiltrated the region behind yesterday and this morning’s convection. High temperatures will remain in the 70s for most areas minus southern MN today while lower 80s can be expected across SD starting tomorrow.

Here’s a look at dew points over the next four days: Many across the region will experience comfortable humidity levels today through Tuesday, especially ND and northern MN. Humidity will hang on across far southern SD during a majority of this period, though it won’t be oppressive.
