Good Thursday afternoon! A nice dry spell over the last several days across the area will transition to a more active pattern starting tonight along a frontal boundary drifting south into NE and IA. A cumulus field has developed across central NE where lift has begun to enter the region. Showers and storms will fire in the vicinity of the clouds draped within the region late this afternoon/early evening (~4pm CDT) across northern NE with more storm development occurring during the evening hours. These storms will follow the upper-level flow heading east across the northern portions of NE eventually reaching northwestern IA shortly after midnight with some isolated storm development possible ahead of this cluster of storms in northern IA. The SPC has highlighted the areas mentioned above for the risk of strong to severe thunderstorms. Due to the amount of instability and moisture available in the atmosphere, hail, strong winds, heavy rains, and/or an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out this evening into the overnight.
The national weather service has issued Heat Advisories across eastern NE into IA for the heat impacting the region today. Several counties in northwestern IA are under flash flood watches as this region will be under the threat for heavy thunderstorms over the next couple of days.
Simulated radar through the next 7pm Saturday: The storms across northern NE will push into northwestern IA early Friday morning before gradually fading across the region. Scattered showers and storms will remain in eastern NE/western IA through the morning. Coverage increases again tomorrow afternoon and evening further south across southern NE into IA Friday night with training storms possible in these areas. Places like southern IA whom have largely miss out on decent rains recently will have a greater shot for showers and storms Friday night into Saturday.
Total rainfall through 7pm Saturday: Most areas will receive 1-2″ of rain with localized higher amounts possible across northern NE and northwest IA with lesser totals across the southern portions of NE and IA. Due to the nature of these storms some areas will miss out on these storms.
