7-1-18 Northern Plains Sunday Update: One round of showers/storms exits while another round pushes in…details here! I.

Good Sunday morning! We currently have a large area of showers and embedded thunderstorms wrapping around a low pressure system in MN as of 10:45am CDT. This widespread convection will lift northeast through early evening, exiting all of MN by 8pm tonight. A smaller area of showers is progressing east across western ND.

Simulated radar through 2am CDT tonight: MN convection will exit the region this evening while the showers across western ND will push east into central ND. Once in central ND more scattered storms are expected to develop (1-2pm CDT) and migrate east into northern MN this evening into the overnight hours. A few of these storms could be strong this afternoon and evening across northern ND and northwest MN, putting out some gusty winds and small hail.

Some upper level energy will lift into the region Monday morning along the ND/SD border and provide small chances for showers while elsewhere remains dry. Next chance for storms comes late Monday across eastern SD, far southeastern ND, and MN where large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes are possible while another batch of storms are likely in the Dakotas Tuesday morning. Brief rundown of those events:

Total rainfall through the next 48 hours: Areas across central/eastern MN will pick up 0.5-1″ of rain with locally higher amounts through today. Elsewhere, 0.5-1″ is possible across portions of ND between the first round today and the second round Tuesday morning. Rain chances will be widely scattered across SD through this time frame.

Here’s a look at temperatures over the next four days: An upper level trough will provide short-term relief from the heat today before it begins to build again early next week.

Here’s a look at dew points over the next four days: Humidity levels will remain low today and tomorrow before a surge in moisture occurs across the region Tuesday.
