6-30-18 Northern Plains Saturday Update: Strong storms possible across southern portions of the area with rain risks continuing into tomorrow. I.

An upper level trough today digs into the region kicking out the heat and humidity with it. Showers and thunderstorms currently reside across south-central SD southward into NE with a few hit or miss showers in southwest MN as of 8:30am CDT. I expect these areas of showers and storms to push northeast and gradually fade with time.

The SPC highlights southeastern MN for the potential of strong storms late this afternoon and into the evening. Threats with these storms include large hail, damaging winds, isolated tornadoes, and heavy rains. The greatest threat for this exists along the MN/IA border.

Simulated radar from 1pm today through 1pm Sunday: Morning convection clears out right before storm initiation (2-3pm CDT) occurs across the southern third of MN and far southeast SD. More storms are set to fire in western WY this afternoon before pushing east into southern SD this evening and late tonight and MN late tonight into the morning.

Brief rundown of the setup for Sunday:

Total rainfall amounts through 8pm CDT Sunday: Overall a general 0.75-1.5″ with locally higher amounts possible where storms setup and train across southeast SD and especially southern MN. A majority of the rains in central MN likely fall Sunday along with scattered rain chances in ND.

Here’s a look at temperatures over the next four days: An upper level trough will help to provide some relief from the recent heat across southern portions of the area before heat begins to build again early next week.

Here’s a look at dew points over the next four days: Humidity levels will drop Sunday across MN before a surge in moisture occurs across the region Tuesday.
