6-30-18 IA/NE Saturday Update: Strong to severe storms possible today across the area…details here! I.

Good Saturday morning! We currently have a couple disorganized areas of showers and thunderstorms from western NE into far northwestern IA with a few gaps in-between them as of 6:15am CDT.

This disorganized area of shower and thunderstorm activity will continue to push across NE and portions of western IA through the morning and early afternoon hours. While none of these storms have reached severe limits, I can’t rule out gusty winds and small hail. Simulated radar through 1pm CDT today:

The SPC has highlighted eastern NE into IA where the coverage of storms (perhaps severe) increases this afternoon into tonight. A few supercells along with bowing clusters of storms are possible during this timeframe. The greatest threats with these storms include large hail, damaging winds, and a few tornadoes.

Simulated radar from 1pm CDT today through 10am CDT Sunday: Morning convection will be replaced with afternoon and evening storm development (~3pm) across eastern NE/western IA becoming more numerous during the evening with widespread storms pushing in from western NE possible through the nighttime hours. Many areas across NE and IA will be impacted by storms of some nature through Sunday morning.

There will be areas that receive heavy rainfall from these storms. Try not to focus on the exact amounts that this model is spitting out and the exact placement of these storms as this depiction won’t be perfect. Widespread 1-3″ of rain is possible with locally higher amounts across portions of far eastern NE into western/northern IA where multiple rounds of storms are possible through Sunday morning. The map below goes out through 7am CDT Sunday.

The upper level ridging bringing widespread heat to the region is slowly migrating east but not without holding on for one last day. 90s for highs are expected across the southeast half of IA for today. Heat indices are likely to surpass 100ºF today before a cold front approaches from the northwest, already moderating temperatures across a majority of NE and for IA tomorrow.

Heat Advisories/Excessive Heat Warnings continue across the eastern half of IA as we enter our last day of this heatwave. Please take precautions with this heat and stay hydrated and cool! Flash Flood Watches are also in effect across far eastern NE and western IA for heavy rains expected this afternoon through Sunday morning.

High temperatures over the next four days:

Low temperatures over the next four days: Overnight lows will become more comfortable Sunday morning across NE before overnight lows warm early to mid next week.

Dew points over the next four days: Dew points well over 70ºF are likely across eastern NE into IA today before subsiding behind the approaching cold front.
