Today’s video:
Storm chances gradually increase this evening and overnight mainly in the north/west parts of the area. Especially watching northern Nebraska tonight for the best storm risks with locally heavy rainfall along with pockets of damaging winds and hail. Saturday is a more active day across the area as the front settles southeast. Highest coverage comes later in the day Saturday through Saturday night.
Upper level energy will kick out of the Rockies late this afternoon into the evening and provide storm chances across western Kansas and northwest Nebraska this evening, with the activity increasing through the night across northern Nebraska. Saturday, storms become numerous during the late afternoon through the night with the highest coverage over western and northern Iowa, eastern Nebraska, northeast Kansas, and into far northwest Missouri.
There will be areas that receive heavy rainfall from these storms. The NAM 3-km solution seems reasonable. Don’t focus on exact amounts that the model is spitting out, and understand it won’t be perfect on placement. Other model data is very similar on placement of these rains this weekend. The map below goes out through 7AM CDT Sunday.
An upper level ridge continues to dominate our pattern as it pushes eastward, bringing along with it the heat. Widespread 90s to low 100s can be expected across a majority of KS and MO through tomorrow. Heat indices are likely to surpass 100ºF (and even 105ºF) through Saturday before a cold front approaches from the northwest, moderating temperatures across the northwest portions of the area.
Widespread Heat Advisories/Excessive Heat Warnings are in effect from the eastern halves of NE and KS into the Great Lakes region because of this significant heat. Please take precautions with this heat and stay hydrated and cool!
