6-28-18 Northern Plains Forecast: Severe weather likely today…timing out the details here! I.

***Severe threat is ongoing across the area and will continue into tonight. All modes of severe weather are likely***

Today’s video:

Good Thursday morning! An area of showers and storms, sometimes severe, are tracking east along the warm front across the ND/SD border with additional flare-ups across northern MN and south-central SD. I expect these storms to follow the mean flow and push eastward through the morning and early afternoon.

More storm development, likely severe, is expected across a majority of the area…especially ND. The SPC has highlighted this area for significant storms this afternoon into tonight with all modes of severe weather likely, including very large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes.

Simulated radar through 7pm CDT this evening: Storms are expected to become more widespread along the warm front across ND into northern MN and push eastward across the area into this evening.

As the cold front pushing into the Dakotas interacts with the unstable airmass draped to its east, supercell storms will develop initially across far eastern MT and western ND/SD before congealing into a line overnight across ND. This cluster of storms will push east through the night and approach northwest MN by morning. Simulated radar from 7pm CDT tonight through 10am CDT Friday:

Rainfall totals through 10am CDT Friday: many locations across ND pick up 0.5-1.5″ with locally higher amounts. More rain is possible across northwest SD than what is depicted and I wouldn’t necessarily buy the rain gaps as this will be a widespread event. More storm development is possible across the Dakotas and northwestern MN tomorrow with additional rain chances heading into Saturday.

Heat lifts northward today into tomorrow due to a building dome of high pressure located just to our south and east. The hottest day of this period will be Friday where temperatures in excess of 90ºF are likely across southeast SD into the southern half of MN. Heat Advisories and Excessive Heat Watches/Warnings have been issued across these areas for tomorrow as heat indices are expected to surpass 100ºF. Please take precautions with this heat and stay hydrated and cool!
