6-26-18 Central Plains Forecast: Unsettled pattern continues today with strong storms possible…significant heat builds mid to late week! I.

Today’s video:

Good Tuesday morning everyone! As of 9:30am CDT we have a  cluster of showers and storms over MO, a flare-up of convection draped along a boundary across central KS, and showers and embedded storms associated with the low pressure system in IA.

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued until 5pm CDT for portions of eastern KS associated the cluster of storms pushing into the area.

Through the rest of the morning into the afternoon these areas will push east with new development occurring along the boundary across MO and southeast KS through the afternoon and evening hours. Some of these storms may be severe with large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes. IA will continue to be impacted with wrap-around precipitation (possibly severe with isolated tornadoes across eastern IA) associated with the low through the evening. Today’s severe weather outlook:

Simulated radar through 2am CDT tonight:

Total rainfall forecast: Target for heavy rains includes southeast KS and southern MO with flash flooding as an additional threat to the severe weather. 1-2″ of rain is likely with locally 2-3″ of rain where the heaviest storms develop and track. This model is likely underdone across central/eastern KS (circled region) where storms are currently located and tracking into.

Heat will surge northward during the later half of the week as a building dome of high pressure positions itself over the eastern portions of our area. Widespread 90s to low 100s can be expected across a majority of KS and MO Wednesday and Thursday. Heat indices are likely to surpass 100ºF through Friday before a cold front approaches from the northwest, moderating temperatures across NE Saturday.

High temperatures over the next four days:

Low temperatures over the next four days: Overnight lows will become elevated over the coming days into the weekend.

Dew points over the next four days: Southerly winds will help to pump in more moist air into the region, with readings surpassing 70ºF for most areas after today.
