Today’s severe outlook: Wind and hail biggest storm threats.

It appears there can be an initial batch of a strong/severe storm potential toward 2-4pm in far northern Illinois.  Forecast radar from 1pm through 4pm CT shown below.  

As we progress through the evening, we’ll see a zone of scattered storms develop from southern Iowa stretching east into west-central Illinois.  Here is the forecast radar snapshot at 10pm:

Forecast precipitation shows that the heavier focus of storms tonight would be in a localized band.  

Hit and miss storms will be the rule for most through the week, but northern and northwest zones are the best focus for storm risks through late week.  A smaller cluster of storms may work into northern areas late Wednesday night, followed by a more robust cluster of storms in northwest Illinois Thursday evening.  We can pinpoint these waves with the 500mb vorticity:
