6-21-18 Central Plains Forecast: Meandering storm system impacts region today…additional storms risks heading into the weekend. I.

IA/MO video:

NE/KS video:

A low pressure system continues to spin over the area, bringing with it heavy rains. Many locations across northeast NE, IA, into central MO picked up well over an inch of rain over the past 24 hours.

An area of wrap-around precipitation continues to impact portions of eastern NE associated with the low pressure system located over western IA. Radar loop as of 8:40am CDT:

These showers will slowly sink south and east over the day today into MO and eastern KS with showers and embedded thunderstorms impacting IA along the northeastern periphery of the low pressure system. Another area of showers and storms moving out of eastern CO/WY may survive and impact far western NE/KS late tonight before fading. Simulated radar through 12pm CDT Friday:

Storms are expected to fire late Friday afternoon and evening across western NE/KS with a track to the east through the overnight hours across KS. Upper level energy supports storm continuation of this cluster overnight Friday/early Saturday morning into southeastern KS and possibly even southern MO. Simulated radar from 1pm CDT Friday through 1pm CDT Saturday:

Severe weather is possible with the storms across western NE/KS Friday afternoon evening and overnight Friday into Saturday morning across southeastern KS and southern MO. The main threat with these storms include large hail and gusty winds. I can’t rule out a few isolated tornadoes with these storms.

Projected rainfall totals through the next 7 days: Unsettled pattern continues this weekend into early next week. 0.5-1.5″ of rain with locally higher amounts is possible across a large portion of the central plains. Central KS has the greatest chance of receiving higher rainfall amounts while rainfall over NE will be more scattered in nature.

High temperatures over the next four days: A relax in heat for the next couple of days before temperatures begin to rise this weekend.

Low temperatures over the next four days:

Dew points over the next four days: Humidity begins to increase late this weekend.

Wind forecast over the next four days: Wind gusts to 40 mph possible along the north and west periphery of the low pressure system today before subsiding tomorrow after the storm system clears the area.
