6-14-18 Northern Plains Forecast: Severe storms possible late today into tonight…active weekend ahead! I.

Today’s video:

Pleasant weather to start the day today across the majority of the area with the exception being Minnesota where lingering showers are still present and a few isolated showers in the Dakotas. This afternoon turns active as instability builds and storms fire (~7pm CDT) along a cold front across the western Dakotas. The largest threat with these storms are large hail (especially central South Dakota), damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes.

Overnight these storms will congeal into a line and push off to the east into Minnesota where the main threat will be heavy rainfall. Redevelopment is possible across the southern portions of Minnesota tomorrow. Simulated radar from 1pm CDT today through 10am CDT tomorrow:

Generally, rainfall amounts between 0.25″-0.5 and possibly up to 1″ are expected through tomorrow across northern portions of Minnesota, but as the NAM3 shows some can miss out on rain risks from both the storms and rain shield in Minnesota.

Southwest flow will become the theme for the weekend bringing with it more chances for storms Friday night into Saturday as well as into next week.

High heat indices are expected south of a boundary positioning itself over central South Dakota into central Minnesota this weekend. Heat indices could top 100ºF across South Dakota today and then southeast South Dakota and southern Minnesota Friday through Sunday.

High temperatures over the next four days: A surge in warmth ahead of a potent cold front today across the Dakotas before a drop in temperatures this weekend in North Dakota and western South Dakota.

Low temperatures over the next four days: Overnight temperatures across southeast South Dakota and southern Minnesota will remain elevated this weekend, with many areas dipping only into the low 70s:
