Today’s video:
Good Wednesday morning everyone! We have lingering showers over portions of the Eastern Dakotas and Southern Minnesota this morning following the passage of a warm front last night. These will continue to weaken and push off to the northeast into the afternoon:
The big story today will be thunderstorms that develop across the Dakotas. Right now we’re targeting southwestern South Dakota and into Central South Dakota for the highest risks of a couple storms becoming strong to severe. Isolated large hail in SW South Dakota and a few storms with damaging winds will be the main threat:
Here’s a look at 24 hour rainfall from 7AM today into tomorrow morning. Note, this is a hi-res ensemble mean, so the precipitation is a bit broad brushed, but it does show where the highest focus of storms will be. With that being said, some of the stronger storms will certainly be capable of producing 1″+ of rain given high instability in the atmosphere:
The boundary spawning tonight’s storms will push off to the east tomorrow and allow for storms to develop tomorrow afternoon and into the evening/overnight hours. These storms can congeal into a line and with a strong low level jet, there is a risk for damaging winds as the line pushes through the far Eastern Dakotas and into Minnesota.
A few scattered storms are possible in far southeast Minnesota Friday evening, but conditions will generally become more quiet over the weekend as drier air moves in. This will allow temperatures to surge into the upper 80s and low to mid 90s:
